Morgan Flodman, Poetry and Literary Fiction Author

Morgan Flodman is a 15 year-old unpublished author from Massachusetts, USA.

Q: When did you first begin writing?

A: "My passion for writing goes back to my early childhood. The earliest memory I have of experiencing the writing process was when my mom and I compiled a Max and Ruby-inspired picture book---of course, I dictated the story and drew the illustrations while she penned the words and stapled the pages. Ever since, I've dabbled in everything from haiku and fan fiction to sonnets and short stories. There was even one time I started crying in my second grade class because my teacher wouldn't let me draft a romantic comedy instead of a personal narrative!"

Q: What do you love about writing? A: "What I love most about writing is how I can prod my readers into thinking about the words they hold in front of them. I tend to overanalyze everything I write and I hope my readers do the same—my work is rich with metaphors and subtle messages between the lines. A simple sentence could possibly change your perspective of the topics I discuss."

Q: Why have you chosen poetry and literary fiction as your main genres?

A: "These two genres enable me to apply abstract techniques while exploring complex themes like politics, faith, and belonging. It’s like standing between the fine line that separates realism from surrealism—I may have one foot on each side, but I accomplish getting a point across nonetheless because the human experience is never just logical or just pathetic. Those two evils should work in harmony with each other."

Q: What are you currently working on?

A: "My current project is a literary dystopian novella that I have been drafting since December 2019. It follows the struggles of a middle-aged woman who has to defend the legacy of her deceased poet father when his work is threatened by her right-wing New England society. My aim is to start the publishing process next year!"

Morgan's writing can be seen in Appelley Publishing's 2018 "RISING STARS COLLECTION", and will be featured in The Apprentice Writer this fall.
